Concept

Combination Dance created a flash mob in Victoria Station on the 6th of February 2018, 100 years since women received the vote. It was based on similar themes explored in an original dance film which you can watch here.

Execution

The piece was created and produced by choreographer Anne-Marie Smalldon and performed with Chloe Mead, Thomas McCann and dancers from the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance.

The dancers generated an audience from the passers-by and commuters. Some of the performers were in contemporary dress and some in period costumes all provide by Mike Lees. Once people were drawn to the designated area, the performance began. Photographs were taken during and after the event from Scott David Photography.

The National Archives, Victoria Bid and Epsom Downs Racecourse were all sponsors of the event and representatives from each joined a selection of VIP’s afterwards in a private reception in the Grosvenor Hotel Victoria.

Anne-Marie spoke and introduced the Deeds Not Words dance film that was premiered at this event.

Speakers Philippa Bilton, a direct descendant of Emily Davison, Victoria Iglikowski from the National Archives and Ruth Duston, Chief Executive of Victoria Bid spoke about the cause and the importance of the activities of everybody involved.

Results

As a direct result of the flash mob in Victoria, Channel Four featured the performance in the news that evening. That was such a success that the performers were asked back to perform later that week at the end of program ‘The Last Leg’ Series 13, Episode 3.
